5 ROOT CANAL MYTHS PROVEN FALSE

Feb 28, 2018

Finding out you need a root canal is something nobody wants to hear, but what if we have all scared ourselves into believing this? There are many myths about root canals on the internet and spread by word of mouth. We want to get down to the root of it and know the truth about the ever-so-dreaded dental procedure.

Myth #1: You only need a root canal if you are experiencing tooth pain.

Not all tooth pain is created equal. It is possible to have a tooth in your mouth, which has already “died” but no longer has any sensation attached to it. In this case, persuasion and temperature testing are done in order to find out if a tooth is due to be replaced or not.

Myth #2: Root canal treatment is painful.

An ironic myth, as a root canal is conducted in order to relieve existing tooth pain. With modern-day technology, advanced techniques, and anesthetics, one can feel as much pain as a tooth filling which could encompass little to no pain at all. The important thing is that the infected tooth is removed from the mouth in order to stop further pain from ensuing.

Myth #3: Root canals cause illness.

This myth comes from a research project done almost a century ago by a man named Dr. Price used to promote tooth extractions, which is the removal of a tooth completely, a very traumatic procedure. It is important to note how oral health can affect the rest of our body. A healthy mouth leads to better health overall, making this one of the easiest myths to debunk.

Myth #4: The benefits of root canal therapy are temporary.

It is up to the patient to keep the effects of root canals to last a long time. The procedures themselves can last a long time. The final restoration, also known as a crown and a good oral hygiene routine at home leads to long-lasting benefits.

Myth #5: Tooth extraction is a good alternative to root canals.

Nothing beats having your natural tooth kept in your mouth. Removal procedures can actually introduce infected blood back into the bloodstream. Bridges, implants, and bone grafts can inevitably lead to more costs and time at the dentist.

While seen as a traumatic dental procedure, we all want beautiful teeth! Use these facts to your own benefit when thinking about your future procedure.
