HEALTHY WINTER FOODS FOR TEETH

Dec 27, 2017

We brush our teeth twice a day, floss at least once a day, gargle regularly, go see the dentist when we should… but there are actually foods that we can eat that can help our teeth! Many people do not consider the fact that certain foods are actually more beneficial to your teeth and oral health than others. As it gets chilly outside, lets take a look at some of the best healthy foods to eat during the winter that help your teeth.

One of the best fruits to eat for the health of your teeth are apples. Like other high fiver fruits, apples actually work by scrubbing away plaque and freshen the breath. So while you are making all those delicious apple pies to eat at family dinners, save an apple or two for yourself.

During the winter months, our immune systems are typically lower when compared to warmer months. For this reason, it is essential to incorporate more vitamins and minerals into our diet. The best vegetables to eat to get more vitamins are dark leafy greens like bok choy, kale and broccoli.

To protect the enamel of the teeth, it is smart to look for foods with phosphorus. Meat, tofu and fatty fish like salmon are chock full of phosphorus. If you need to warm up on a chilly day, try making a broth from the bones of your meat, which is another source of phosphorus.

It is also important to remember some foods to avoid for the health of your teeth. Foods that are highly acidic can erode your teeth. Foods like tomatoes, citrus juices and pickles are particularly acidic and not the best for the health of your teeth. Coffee and red wine are also some of the worst teeth strainers, so try to limit or avoid these items if you want to keep your teeth bright and white.
