If you suffer from frequent headaches, TMJ disorder (or TMD) could be the cause. Symptoms include headaches, pain or soreness around the joint of the jawbone, a popping or clicking sound when opening and closing your mouth, and pain in your upper back or shoulders.

What is TMD?

The temporomandibular joint is the joint that joins the jawbone to the rest of the skull. TMD occurs when the joint fails to function properly. This could be caused by bruxism (better known as teeth grinding), clenching or a failure of your teeth to line up properly. Our team at Aqua Dental will evaluate your case to see if you suffer from TMD and how best to treat it.

Treating Bruxism

We offer a number of treatments for TMJ disorder. If bruxism or teeth grinding is the cause of your TMD, we provide night guards to keep you from grinding your teeth when you sleep. Most people who grind their teeth do it while asleep. Because of this, you may not be able to control it. This can not only put extra stress on the temporomandibular joint, but it also can destroy your teeth. A night guard is a removable appliance that fits over your teeth at night and keeps you from damaging your teeth.

Occlusal Adjustment

If your bruxism or TMJ disorder is due to your teeth not meeting properly, our doctors may recommend an occlusal adjustment, which slightly alters the biting surface of your teeth so that your teeth come together properly. This simple procedure can make those frequent headaches vanish.
