THINGS TO AVOID FOR A BRIGHTER SMILE

May 16, 2018

At Aqua Dental in Pearland, TX our patients often ask about achieving and maintaining a brighter, whiter, healthier-looking smile. Luckily there are quite a few ways a patient can go about having a whiter smile, from over-the-counter products and professional teeth whitening to lifestyle and dietary changes. The teeth whitening products and treatments are pretty self-explanatory, but do you know which lifestyle and dietary changes could help brighten your smile?

Coffee

Sorry for everyone out there that gets through each day by drinking copious amounts of coffee but is known to stain teeth heavily. For those that just can’t give up on the habit, try drinking your coffee using a straw. We also recommend rinsing your mouth and drinking water after drinking coffee as this can help reduce staining caused by the coffee.

Soda

Another favorite among most American households, soda, cola, pop, whatever you call it, is also notorious for staining of teeth and even erosion of enamel due to the acidity. When drinking soda, we recommend drinking it quickly if you must and also following it with water. This can reduce the acidity in your mouth and protect your teeth from staining, erosion, and damage.

Red Wine

We promise we aren’t trying to remove all of your favorite things from your life, but unfortunately, red wine is another tooth staining culprit. This is due to the pigment-producing substances and tannins typically found in red wine. Using a straw and making sure you rinse after each glass can help reduce the risk of staining.

White Wine

Probably didn’t expect to also see white wine, right? Unfortunately, recent research has shown that white wine is actually highly acidic and could increase your risk of dark dental stains along with the erosion of enamel and damage to your teeth.

Tobacco

Last but not least, tobacco. As if you needed any additional reasons to quit, tobacco (smoked, chewed, etc.) is also known to be highly staining to teeth. It can also lead to gum disease, oral cancers and a range of other dental complications.
